Finders Keepers?

Mr. K here. I'm taking over the blog tonight so I can plead my case before Scottie Mom rats me out. Truth be told, friends, I did get in a bit of trouble but not because I played a prank. No, I stumbled upon a little treasure on the ground in Savannah and got a little upset when Scottie Mom tried to steal it. Heather and I were walking Scottie Mom about the park while we waited for Scottie Dad to bring the car. My snout picked up the most glorious scent and led me to a nearby bush. Sure enough, just sitting there waiting for me was a large piece of meat still on the bone. I knew I had to act quickly or else Heather or Scottie Mom would snatch it up first.

Unfortunately, I wasn't fast enough. I was able to grab it but Scottie Mom saw me and demand I put it down. I wasn't giving up the fight that easily. I looked at Scottie Mom and attempted to chew faster. This did not make Scottie Mom happy. She tried to pry the object from my grasp, telling me to let go. Friends, you must understand: I had never tasted anything like this in my whole life...how could I let go? I sucked the rest of the meat piece into my mouth so Scottie Mom couldn't get to it. Would you believe that didn't stop her? She obviously knew what a prize I had picked up and was so hungry for a piece of it herself that she rudely interrupted my meal and stuck her fingers in my mouth to loosen up my grip. Seriously, woman!

It was here where, admittedly, I took things too far. Scottie Mom crossed the line trying to retrieve my prize and I had to teach her a lesson. I looked her dead in the eye and slowly began to shut my jaw tighter - her fingers still attempting to steal my prized meat. She looked right back at me then. Her eyes grew wide and I could see tears brimming. Scottie Mom's a toughie and held her own until she couldn't anymore. She pulled out her fingers just before I made them part of my meal. Only trouble was: in this swift finger retrieval movement, she knocked out my prized meat and I was distracted by a cough or two. Next thing I knew, she was flinging my meat in a trash can far out of my reach. And her finger was pretty swollen.

I knew I had done wrong and I've done my best to make amends with Scottie Mom since our trip. She claims she wasn't trying to steal my meat for her enjoyment and that she was only concerned for my health. Something about the meat being rotten, me getting sick, the bones being bad for me and such. I don't know if that's all true (I mean, it was a really good find...I'm sure Scottie Mom would have snuck a taste if I hadn't gotten to it first) but I've chosen to put this whole thing behind us. Scottie Dad took care of Scottie Mom the minute he got back to us with the car. Luckily, my pearly whites didn't break her skin and the swelling went down after a day or two. Still, he watched over her injured finger religiously and I knew he wasn't too pleased with me. Being a big steak guy, I thought he would have had more sympathy for the situation! Instead, here I am: pleading my case to you, my friends. What would you have done if you found yourself in my situation and how do you suggest I make it up to Scottie Mom?

  1. NOBODY interferes with my food. The Canine Court judges you innocent. Go to Scottie Mom and get some "make-up" treats.

Oh My! Such a story..Scotty Mom could have saved your life! What if a bad person had put poison or a razor or or…Oh My! in the meat!? Did you think of that Mr. K?

  3. Oh dear...well I would have done the same as mum!! that meat could be rotten, cooked bones are dangerous due to shards splitting,it could have been baited, any number of things..now I know of that was Forrest or Doc they would have been reluctant also to give it up and I have pried stuff from their mouths also..the only time the teeth have clamped was as an accident when we bth grab a toy at the same time..it depends I suppose on how strong a food guarding doggie you are... I know mum will forgive you :) hugs Fozziemum

  4. Tend to agree with Fozzie mum. Both “people” were “right”. Maybe teach K to “drop it” if a next time, but probably won’t be and since Scotties like the approval of their masters, next time he’ll probably let it go.

  5. Both people were "right", Mr. K and Scottie Mom. Scotties don't like to make their masters angry. Next time I bet he gives it up. Might teach him the words"drop it"?

  6. Unfortunately, these things happen. Not often, but sometimes, even in a loving dog. Maybe teach Mr. K to learn what "drop it" means? He does look a bit guilty. You were right to try to get the meat away. I'm sure he's a great dog, maybe this is no great earth shaking issue. Scotties don't like to hurt their masters. I bet next time with a little coaxing, he'll give it up.

  7. We understand your dilemma Mr. K....but we do think your Mama was only trying to do what was good for you. Our Mama taught us "drop it" and we know that when she says that, it is for our own good.

We think that if you just give your Mama lots of snuggles, that would let her know things are good between you both. We all know Mama's rock when it comes to unconditional love!!

  10. Oh dear Mr K, we think your mom was in the right this time. The prize could have been poisoned! Just think how sick you could have been. Sorry for the loss of such a tasty treat. 12. Mr. K your mom knows whats best for you. Show the love to your mom and say you are sorry. I know you get lots of good eats from her so you did not need to keep that dirty dangerous treat.

  13. Arooo to your Scottie Mom, Mr. K. Mr. Winston would argue your points, but would like it barked out as a still living canine citizen near Savannah that it MAY smell good, but it's not always good for YOU. And yes, Mr. Winston has tried to assert his opinion via his teeth before...and not had treats all day after that, because he broke the skin. Be glad your Scottie Mom is not THAT firm...

  14. I agree Mr. K. sometimes Mom's can put their whole arm inside of you to steal the treasure you found. We had blue colored nails, swollen fingers and even blood when she tried to get my prey. I hope your mom's finger is well and my mom says your mom is right, things we found on the street can be rotten or poisoned by evildoers, so we better avoid that "street-treat" :o)

  15. Ugh it's always a nightmare situation when a dog finds something they really shouldn't eat, such as a bone. I know with Kasper and Zoey they wouldn't obey a "drop it" for a bone no matter how high value treats I had, but if I tried to take it from their mouth Kasper would most certainly react.

And even the act of attempting to take the treasure away can make the dog gulp the food faster, which is most certainly not what you want...

Tough situation. I'm glad you were able to get the bone from Mr K and didn't get too hurt!

  16. Sorry Mr. K but I side with Scottie Mom on this one. If I were you I would kiss her finger and say you are sorry.

  17. Mr. K, your mom was just protecting you from any harm. Give mom a smooch and all will be forgiven. You are loved too much for mom to be mad. Kim, Magnum and Ruby.

  18. Oh dear things do get lost in translation. You tasted something good and poor mum thought it might be something bad. We think you go give mum a few kisses and all will be forgiven. We speak dog and they speak human so stuff happens. Have a marvellous Monday.
    Best wishes Molly

  19. Your owner reaches in one end and your vet reaches in the other end. Why oh why are they always trying to get out what is inside of you. Ownership says What's Mine is Mine, and What's Yours Is Mine!

  21. Speaking from experience, it's better to drop it than have fingers in my mouth. I secretly applaud you for being so quick!

  24. Even though we have been taught drop it and leave it, we have tried to grab the odd road snack from time to time. SHE jerks us up by our hind quarters, tucks them under her left arm so our head is swinging upside down...if we aren't so startled that we immediately drop our tasty treasure, she sticks her right hand in the jaw joint and flicks the contents down to the ground. She is lightning fast! We are so startled by the whole operation our mouths generally fly open in astonishment and we loose our yummy. People observing her, bent over at the waist, squirming Scottie held clamped upside down under one arm, have been known to rush to our aid thinking she is having some kinf of fit. She calmly restores whichever of us is wrong side up to the ground and continues on as if nothing happened. She says she prefers to start at the rear end as there is less chance of encountering a sharp tooth in step one.
